It is with great pleasure, excitement, and anticipation that we proudly announce the following update to the 79’ Squire Shop restoration project…….
She's coming back!!!
After a couple of months of hard work and preparation with rebuilding/upgrading the trailer itself, the 79' Squire Shop will return to Seafair for the first time in 21 years!!!
For those unaware, this was the boat that the legendary Chip Hanauer scored his very first Unlimited victory in! The hull will be on tilt and on static display for everyone of all ages to enjoy.
It's rare that a privately owned vintage hull makes it down to any event as a display (usually it's provided directly from the museum itself), and even more rare one in un-restored condition. We wanted everyone to see this boat up close and personal, to fully appreciate the work it's going to take to bring her back to her former glory..............and to generate interest towards the restoration effort of course.
This hull last raced in Hawaii on October 11, 1992 (in saltwater no less). This will be the hulls first appearance in public and back at Seafair since August 2, 1992. We've all seen the beautiful restorations from the museum over the years, but how many of those gems did you get to see BEFORE they actually started tearing into the restoration itself? Well, here's your rare chance to do so..........were bringing her out for the fans!
This appearance will give everyone a chance to see how a hydroplane inevitably ends its racing career, and what happens to them when exposed to the elements for years. You will literally be able to see how this hull was heavily modified over its lifetime, and discover what still remains of the original configuration. Perhaps you'll even run into former crew members, drivers, and possibly owners while you stop by to check her out. We even had a large custom banner made to show the boats visual history over the years. Some of you may remember seeing her as the Miss Paddock Pools, Jackpot Food Mart, and Thor Racing incarnations.
Those familiar with the surrounding neighborhood near Stan Sayers pits knows it's a complete madhouse all Seafair weekend long..........parking can be a challenge in itself. The good news is you won't have to go far at all to see the boat........up close. Most people travel to the pits via Rainier Avenue and then turn onto Genesee Street. If that's the route you go, you absolutely WILL NOT miss it. The boat will be on 42nd Avenue, right on Genesee Street...............nearly adjacent to Genesee Park (near the soccer fields and Metro bus drop off/pickups).
Our neighbors were kind enough to allow us to use their yard to display the boat all weekend long. To save on costs, this was the only way we could bring the boat out. Without their generosity and cooperation, we would not have had the opportunity to do this. Be sure to say hello and thank them when you stop by. Everyone knows my house, the one with the HUGE Beacon Plumbing banner........can't miss that either. If you can see the banner, you will find the boat!!!
As hinted at awhile back, this is where you can get your very own limited edition restoration campaign button. You will receive one for every $5.00 donation made towards the project (while supplies last). There were only 200 buttons made, so they will likely sell out quickly. Buttons will be available with the boat display itself, as well as with the museum's booth in the food court area by the pits.
We’ve also had some VERY limited edition 79’ Squire Shop cloisonné pins made of the boat as well. Only 100 of these were made, and each one is serial numbered. These pins however are only available at the site of the boat itself……so it’s worth stopping by to get your hands on one.
100% of the button and cloisonné pins proceeds go directly to the Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum towards the restoration effort. We want to spread the word about the project, and we felt this was a excellent way to get started!!!
The current 79' Squire Shop ownership group will be available throughout the weekend, so you can be sure to stop by and inquire about the project. In what's sort of become a local Seafair weekend tradition in recent years, we will be Casper model racing once again on Friday and Saturday evening. This would be the ideal time to pick up your button and/or pin, and we will likely have select amounts on hand if you see us on the shore or in the pits.
Stop by after the action on the lake ends for the day, come check out the 79' Squire Shop hull up close, and witness some really fun model racing as well. Just as the fun on the lake concludes for the day, it's just getting started on Genesee Street. Come meet the ownership group and perhaps a few surprises" and see what all the madness is all about. You may even run into a current H1 personality or two..........you never know who's going to drop in!
We had a initial big push building up the website and have been a little idle for the past month or so..............been working hard trying to get the trailer/boat ready to bring down. We will update the website with pictures, stories, etc. after Seafair of course…….so keep an eye out for that.
Remember.............each of you are as much a part of this journey as we are, great things happen when we all work together. Each of us had an opportunity to get involved and do something special…………
